The Hierarchy of Athletic Development – Work Capacity/Hypertrophy

🏋️‍♂️ Develop Your Work Capacity & Hypertrophy! 🏋️‍♀️

Now that we’ve established the importance of a high-quality testing and evaluation process, let’s dive into the first physical qualities we aim to develop:

Work Capacity & Hypertrophy.

What is Work Capacity?
Simply put, it’s the amount of work you can perform in a given period. For instance, imagine carrying a sandbag between cones for 10 minutes. If the first time you manage 8 trips, and after training, you hit 15, that’s a huge improvement! This increase directly impacts your ability to sustain high performance across multiple sets.

Why Does Work Capacity Matter?
A trainee with limited work capacity struggles with repeated efforts, like 5 sets of 5 reps at 80% intensity. This is where we see performance drop-off, especially in the last sets. We want to avoid this by establishing a solid foundation.

Hypertrophy: The Missing Link
We pair work capacity with hypertrophy at the base of our training pyramid. Adequate muscle mass is crucial. Without it, strength is compromised because the pool of motor units within the muscle isn’t large enough. We focus on rep ranges that increase size while also stimulating the nervous system. Forget the fleeting pump you get at a commercial gym—this is about building lasting size.

Ready to Take the Next Step?
For young athletes in grades 7-12, now is the best time to start. Build a safe, effective relationship with strength training that will set you up for future success.
