Virtual Programming - The Squat Dilemma

Over the past three years our virtual coaching membership has grown quite a bit. On numerous occasions I have come across the SQUAT DILEMMA. When back squat is implemented into our program as a primary lift we need to be VERY specific about what our expectations are. If we are not, then people will either fall back on what they think is a proper back squat or will rely on what a previous coach had taught them.

While video demonstrations are great, providing specific cues and explaining why we perform the squat the way we do is essential. Regardless of a members past experience, they have not trained on the Science Over Tradition program and should be made aware of the WHY behind the HOW.

Here are a few changes that we feel can help the virtual training experience:

𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘀

In a live team setting having coaches sign off on the top set is a great way to monitor progress, check form, and ensure that bar speed and weight are appropriate. In the virtual world, we encourage members to send in a short clip of their top set as this will provide a ton of feedback and can help us ensure quality across our platform.

𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a whole lot more. In our videos we make sure that our form is spot on as that is what will be replicated by our members. This is also a great reason why coaches must practice what they preach. If you never squat how are you going to tell someone else to?

𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝘂𝗲𝘀

Different people will have different learning styles. While some will want to watch video demonstrations, others will benefit more from cues that are written out.

These are just a few of the variables that must be considered when it comes to coaching on a virtual platform. We are continuing to learn and evolve and are constantly looking to improve our member experience. We are truly appreciate all of our current members for their daily effort and confidence in our program.
